If your “seasonal” allergies seem to stick around no matter the month, you’re definitely not alone, especially here in Dallas, TX. One week it’s cedar, the next it’s grass, and somehow your symptoms never got the memo to leave. If you’ve been powering through tissues and hoping it’ll pass… it might be time to get allergy testing.
When Allergy Season Never Really Ends
In Dallas, allergy seasons love to overlap. Just as one fades, another rolls in. Add indoor triggers like dust and pet dander, and it can feel like your body never gets a break. Sound familiar?
- You wake up congested more days than not
- You always have tissues nearby (just in case)
- Your eyes itch at the most random times
- You feel fine one day… and miserable the next
- “Seasonal” has turned into “all the time.”
At that point, it’s not just seasonal anymore, it’s perennial.
Why This Happens in Dallas, TX
Dallas weather plays a big role. Warm temperatures, wind, and long growing seasons mean allergens linger longer and overlap more. Common triggers include:
- Tree pollen: We have Mountain cedar pollen in January, elm pollen in February, 15 or more other trees in March, especially oak. Pecan pollen in April and May, Cedar elm pollen in late July, August, and September. Red berry juniper pollen in September and October, Mountain cedar in November and December. The only month we don’t usually see tree pollen is June.
- Grass pollen: Any time it’s not completely frozen, and there’s some moisture in the ground, grass is basically a perennial allergen in North Texas. The highest months are May and June. It can dry up in July and August somewhat, but when it rains, it pollinates again)
- Weed pollen: Like ragweed (late summer into fall). There are a few weeks that come out in late spring and summer, like plantain and carelessweed.
- Mold spores: Especially after rain. Spores are how fungi protect themselves when they’re stressed. When it’s dry, the spores are released, and they wait for the next rain, so they can start new fungal growth. They have no season, but different ones are prevalent before, during, and after rain. When you see a cloud of dust coming off a combine on a farm, you are looking at spore counts as high as a million sometimes, according ot Harvard mycologist, Harriet Burge.
- Dust mites and pet dander: (year-round indoors): these are perennial allergens, but interestingly, dust mites proliferate most at 75 degrees indoor temperature, when there is 75% humidity. So if you think of temperate climates, where natural outdoor air is allowed in in spring and fall, they end up bothering people the most in July. That rule doesn’t really apply to North Texas, because in July our homes are generally closed up and air-conditioned, and it’s hot and not that humid. But you might be able to see a seasonality to your dust symptoms when we have rain and temperatures in the 70s.
So yes—if it feels nonstop, there’s a reason.
When It’s Time to Stop Guessing
If you’ve been trying a little bit of everything but still feel off, allergy testing can help connect the dots.It may be time to get tested if:
- Your symptoms last for months, not weeks, in at least 2 consecutive years.
- Relief from over-the-counter options doesn’t last
- Sleep, focus, or daily life feels affected
- You can’t pinpoint what’s triggering symptoms
- You’re ready for a clearer, more personalized plan
You deserve more than guessing games.
